Volunteer at Livermore (Arbor Vista): Tech Tutor

Description

Arbor Vista is seeking one Tech Tutor to provide technology support to residents who have expressed interest in improving their digital skills. The volunteer will educate and assist residents with cell phones, laptops, tablets, and other personal technology in the community room.

Sessions will take place during the first and third weeks of each month on Wednesdays or Thursdays, beginning August 5, 2026. The preferred start time is 2:00 PM, and the estimated volunteer shift is 1 to 1.5 hours. Scheduling is negotiable and may be adjusted based on volunteer availability and resident needs. Visitor parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Reports to:

Volunteer Coordinator and the site’s Service Coordinator

Goal of Position:

To help residents build confidence using technology, manage everyday digital tasks, access information, and stay connected with others.

Specific Tasks:

  1. Assess residents’ technology needs and tailor support to their interests and skill levels.
  2. Provide one-on-one assistance with cell phones, laptops, tablets, and other digital devices.
  3. Answer residents’ questions and help troubleshoot common technology issues.
  4. Teach residents how to use their devices more independently.
  5. Manage multiple requests on a first-come, first-served basis when needed.
  6. Offer simple lessons or demonstrations based on resident interests.
  7. Remain patient and supportive of residents with limited technology experience or limited English proficiency.
  8. Ensure all participating residents sign the sign-in sheet.
  9. Communicate any material, equipment, or support needs to the Volunteer Coordinator or Service Coordinator.

Qualifications:

Physical/Age Requirements:

  • Able to sit, stand, and move around the community room during sessions.

Skills/Education/Experience:

  • Strong general knowledge of computers, smartphones, tablets, and digital tools.
  • Ability to explain technology concepts clearly and simply.
  • Friendly, patient, dependable, open-minded, and solution-oriented.
  • Prior experience teaching, training, or assisting others with technology is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate in English is required.
  • Ability to speak Chinese, Russian, or Korean is strongly preferred.
