Glen Brook Terrace is seeking a volunteer Chorus Instructor to lead residents in singing original or covered material. This opportunity is being requested due to resident interest and as part of piloting a new community activity. The volunteer will help create a fun, welcoming, and engaging environment where residents can sing together, build confidence, and connect through music.

Sessions may take place weekly or bi-weekly on Tuesdays or Thursdays, with Thursdays preferred. Volunteers should arrive at 2:00 PM, and the estimated volunteer shift is 1.5 hours. Scheduling is negotiable and may be adjusted based on volunteer availability and resident needs. An electronic keyboard may be provided, or volunteers may bring their own instrument.

Volunteer Coordinator and the site’s Service Coordinator

Goal of Position:

To provide residents with a creative and social music activity that encourages self-expression, confidence, connection, and community-building through group singing.

Specific Tasks:Lead residents in singing original or covered songs.Prepare simple and engaging songs or music activities for each session.Create a welcoming and supportive environment for residents of all skill levels.Provide basic vocal guidance, encouragement, and direction as appropriate.Use an electronic keyboard or other musical accompaniment if desired.Encourage participation and adapt song selections based on resident interest.Monitor attendance and ensure all participants sign the sign-in sheet.Communicate any supply, equipment, or support needs to the Service Coordinator or Volunteer Coordinator.Remain friendly, patient, and supportive when interacting with residents.
Qualifications:

Physical/Age Requirements:

Able to stand or sit while leading a group activity.Able to speak and sing clearly during sessions.Able to assist with light setup or cleanup if needed.

Skills/Education/Experience:

Experience with singing, chorus, music, or vocal instruction.Comfortable leading a group of residents in song.Friendly, patient, dependable, and open-minded.Interest in working with seniors.Ability to play keyboard or another instrument is helpful but not required.Prior teaching, facilitation, or group leadership experience is a plus.

This opportunity is designed to help residents communicate with their Asian neighbors, build positive relationships, and strengthen community connection. Sessions may be held weekly, bi‑weekly, or monthly on Thursdays or Fridays in the afternoon, with a flexible start date beginning in July.

To support cross‑cultural connection by helping English‑speaking residents develop basic Mandarin or Cantonese language skills for everyday communication.

Specific Tasks: Prepare simple, engaging language lessons focused on basic conversation.Guide residents through pronunciation, vocabulary, and common phrases.Encourage participation and create a supportive learning environment.Answer questions and adapt lessons based on resident interest.Monitor attendance and ensure participants sign the sign‑in sheet.

Able to stand and move around the room during sessions.

Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese.Friendly, patient, and open‑minded.Interest in teaching language.Previous teaching or facilitation experience is helpful but not required.
